How to use Trial & Error:
This method is the most commonly used manual technique. Start by setting your main cereal (energy source) and protein source. Adjust the Inclusion % of each until your Total Inclusion is exactly 100% and your nutrients match your target requirements.Trial & Error Feed Formulation (Pearson Square Extension)
Formulate animal feed using the traditional Trial & Error method. Manually balance complex rations for protein and energy using multiple ingredients and instant feedback.
While massive commercial feed mills use computerized linear programming to calculate diets, small farmers and ag-extension students often rely on the traditional "Trial & Error" method. This technique involves selecting a mix of available ingredients, guessing an initial ratio, and manually adjusting the percentages until the nutritional targets are met. Doing this on paper with a calculator takes hours of frustrating recalculations. The Trial & Error Feed Formulation Tool digitizes this process, providing instant nutritional feedback as you tweak the sliders, allowing you to rapidly balance complex diets using intuition and available farm resources.
Moving Beyond the Pearson Square
The Pearson's Square Method is excellent, but it is severely limited: it can only balance one nutrient (like protein) using exactly two ingredients.
A real-world diet requires mixing corn, soybean meal, bran, limestone, and vitamin premixes to balance protein, energy, and calcium simultaneously. The Trial & Error method allows you to use an unlimited number of ingredients. You set the baseline percentages, and the software instantly aggregates the total nutritional profile of the batch, showing you exactly where the diet is deficient so you can adjust accordingly.
The Concept of Fixed Ingredients
The secret to successful manual formulation is locking in your "Fixed Ingredients" first. These are items that must be included at very specific, non-negotiable rates.
For example, you know that Vitamin Premix must be exactly 1.0% of the diet, Salt must be 0.5%, and Limestone (Calcium) must be 2.0%. You "fix" these ingredients in the calculator, taking up 3.5% of the total formula. You then use the remaining 96.5% of the space to perform your trial and error with the bulk grains and protein meals, ensuring the micro-nutrients are never accidentally diluted.
How to Use the Formulator
First, input the nutritional profile of your available raw ingredients (e.g., Corn: 8.5% Protein, 3300 Kcal Energy).
Next, begin assigning percentage weights to each ingredient (e.g., 60% Corn, 30% Soy). The tool will instantly calculate the aggregate Protein and Energy of the total mix. If the protein is too low, you manually increase the Soy slider and decrease the Corn slider until the target is met. If you want the computer to automatically find the absolute cheapest combination of these ingredients for you, you must upgrade to our Least-Cost Linear Formulator.
Balancing Protein and Energy
The hardest part of manual formulation is the see-saw effect between Protein and Energy. Ingredients high in protein (Soybean Meal) are usually lower in energy. Ingredients high in energy (Corn, Oil) are extremely low in protein.
When you increase the Soy to fix a protein deficiency, your total energy levels will suddenly drop. You must then add a dash of vegetable oil to fix the energy, which slightly dilutes the protein again. The real-time feedback of this calculator allows you to easily navigate this see-saw, tracking both metrics simultaneously until the diet is perfectly balanced.
Expert Insights & FAQs
Quick answers to common questions about this utility.
Why does my total mix equal 105%?
The fundamental rule of formulation is that the total mixture must equal exactly 100% (or 1,000 kg for a 1-ton batch). If you blindly increase sliders to add more protein, you will exceed 100%. If you increase Soy by 5%, you MUST decrease another ingredient (like Corn) by 5% to maintain the physical reality of the batch.
Does this tool calculate amino acid profiles?
The standard trial and error tool is designed for macro-nutrients (Crude Protein, Energy, Calcium). Balancing complex micro-nutrients like exact Lysine and Methionine ratios manually is nearly impossible because adjusting one ingredient alters everything else. Advanced amino acid balancing requires linear programming software.
Can I formulate a diet for ruminants (cows) using this?
Yes, but ruminant formulation requires tracking vastly different metrics than poultry or pigs. Instead of standard Energy and Protein, you must track Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF), Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF), and Rumen Degradable Protein (RDP) to ensure the cow's rumen bacteria can physically ferment the feed.
