Pool Chemical Dosing Calculator
Calculate the exact amount of chlorine, acid, or baking soda needed to balance your swimming pool. Maintain perfect pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer levels safely.
Maintaining a swimming pool is an ongoing exercise in chemistry. If the water chemistry falls out of balance, the pool quickly turns into a green, cloudy swamp that breeds dangerous bacteria. Conversely, dumping too much chlorine into the water causes severe eye irritation and damages the pool liner. The Pool Chemical Dosing Calculator removes the guesswork from pool maintenance. By inputting your current water test results, it calculates the exact fluid ounces or pounds of chemicals required to perfectly balance your water chemistry.
The Triangle of Pool Balance
Pool water is governed by three primary metrics: pH, Total Alkalinity (TA), and Chlorine (Sanitizer).
The pH determines how acidic or basic the water is (ideal is 7.4 to 7.6). If the pH is too high, the chlorine becomes chemically "locked" and cannot kill bacteria. Total Alkalinity acts as a buffer for the pH; if TA is too low, the pH will swing wildly every time it rains. You must always adjust Alkalinity first (using Baking Soda), then adjust the pH (using Muriatic Acid or Soda Ash), and finally adjust the Chlorine.
Understanding Chlorine Types
Not all chlorine is the same strength, and the calculator requires you to select the specific chemical you are using.
Liquid Chlorine (Sodium Hypochlorite) is exactly like household bleach but twice as strong (usually 10-12%). It works instantly but leaves no residue. Cal-Hypo Powder is highly concentrated (often 65-73%) but adds calcium to the water. Dichlor/Trichlor Pucks add Cyanuric Acid (CYA) to the water, which acts like sunscreen to protect the chlorine from the sun, but too much CYA will permanently ruin the water.
How to Use the Calculator
First, input your total pool volume. If you do not know the total gallons of your pool, you must estimate it using our Volume Converter combined with basic geometric math (Length × Width × Average Depth × 7.5).
Next, use your pool test kit (strips or liquid drops) to find your current chemical levels. Input those current levels alongside your target levels. The calculator will output a step-by-step recipe, telling you exactly how many ounces or pounds of each specific chemical to add to reach your target.
Chemical Handling Safety
Pool chemicals are highly concentrated and incredibly dangerous if handled improperly. Never mix different types of chemicals together in the same bucket. Mixing chlorine and muriatic acid creates a deadly, explosive toxic gas.
Always add the chemicals individually, directly into the deepest part of the pool while the pump is running on high speed to ensure rapid dilution. Never add water to acid; always add acid slowly into the massive body of pool water.
Expert Insights & FAQs
Quick answers to common questions about this utility.
Why is my chlorine level zero even though I add it every day?
Your Cyanuric Acid (CYA/Stabilizer) level is likely zero. Without CYA, the ultraviolet rays from the sun will completely destroy all the chlorine in your pool in less than 3 hours. Alternatively, you might have a massive, unseen algae bloom that is consuming the chlorine as fast as you add it.
Can I just use regular baking soda from the grocery store?
Yes! 'Alkalinity Increaser' sold at pool stores for $30 a bucket is literally just Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda). You can buy giant bags of baking soda at wholesale grocery stores for a fraction of the cost to achieve the exact same chemical result.
How long should I wait to swim after adding chemicals?
After adding standard maintenance doses of liquid chlorine or acid, you should wait roughly 1 to 2 hours with the pump running to ensure it is fully mixed. If you 'Shock' the pool (adding a massive dose of chlorine to kill algae), you must wait until the chlorine drops back down to safe swimming levels (usually under 5 ppm), which can take 24 to 48 hours.
