Seed Rate Calculator (Kg per Hectare/Acre)

Calculate the exact weight of seeds required to plant a field. Adjusts for germination percentage, seed purity, and 1000-seed weight to prevent costly over-purchasing.

Planting a commercial field requires a delicate financial balance. If a farmer buys too much seed, they waste thousands of dollars on inventory they cannot use next year. If they buy too little, the field is underpopulated, resulting in massive yield losses at harvest. The Seed Rate Calculator utilizes the physical characteristics of the seed batch—including its viability and mass—to translate a target plant population into the exact Kilograms or Pounds of raw seed required to achieve a perfect stand.

Translating Population to Weight

You cannot simply buy "30,000 seeds." Seed is sold by weight (pounds or kilograms). To make this conversion, agronomy relies on the 1000-Seed Weight (or Test Weight).

Because a kernel of corn is massive compared to a tiny mustard seed, the calculator must know how much 1,000 specific seeds weigh in grams. By combining the target plant population with the test weight, the tool determines the base physical weight required to cover the field. If you do not yet know your target population based on your tractor's row spacing, you must first use our Plant Population Calculator.

Understanding Pure Live Seed (PLS)

The base weight calculation assumes every single seed is perfect. In reality, a bag of seed contains dust, broken kernels, and weed seeds (Purity). Furthermore, a portion of the seeds are simply dead and will not sprout (Germination Rate).

This combined metric is called Pure Live Seed (PLS). If a bag has 90% purity and 90% germination, its PLS is only 81%. This means 19% of the bag is effectively useless dirt. The calculator automatically divides your base weight by the PLS percentage, artificially inflating the amount of seed you must purchase to guarantee the correct number of living plants emerge from the soil.

How to Use the Calculator

Input your target plant population (e.g., 80,000 plants per hectare) and the total area of your field. Next, input the 1000-Seed Weight (this is almost always printed on the seed tag by the manufacturer).

Finally, input the Purity and Germination percentages (also found on the certified seed tag). The tool will output the exact total weight of seed you need to purchase from the supplier. For managing chemical applications on this field later in the season, use our Pesticide & Herbicide Dose Calculator.

Calibrating the Planter

Knowing you need 50 kilograms of seed for the field is only the first step. You must now calibrate your mechanical tractor planter to physically drop exactly that amount.

If you set the planter gears incorrectly, you might drop all 50 kilograms in the first half of the field, leaving the rest barren. This calculator provides the metric required (Seed Rate per Hectare/Acre) to properly read your planter's manual and adjust the metering plates before driving into the field.

Expert Insights & FAQs

Quick answers to common questions about this utility.

3 Frequently Asked Questions
What is 'Field Emergence' and why is it different from Germination?

Germination is tested in a perfect, warm laboratory. Field Emergence accounts for real-world soil conditions (cold, wet, compacted soil). A seed batch with 95% laboratory germination might only have an 85% emergence rate in a cold, muddy field. You must manually lower the germination input slightly if planting in harsh conditions.

Why do I need to input the 1000-seed weight?

Seed size varies wildly even within the exact same species due to weather during the growing season. A bag of drought-stressed wheat seeds will be much smaller and lighter than perfectly irrigated wheat seeds. Using the specific batch weight ensures the mathematical conversion is accurate.

Does seed coating affect the weight?

Yes, significantly. Many modern commercial seeds are coated with fungicides and insecticides. This chemical coating can increase the physical weight of the seed by up to 30%. You must use the 1000-seed weight of the *coated* seed, otherwise you will severely under-purchase.
